Comets Top SASS

HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston Comets picked up hard-fought 75 to 72 victory Tuesday night over the San Antonio Silver Stars inside Reliant Arena in front of an announced crowd of 7,059 fans.

Houston (1-5) picked up win number one with the victory while the Silver Stars (2-3) fall below .500 with the loss.

Tina Thompson led the Comets with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Rookie wing player Matee Ajavon added 15 points for the Comets while center Michelle Snow scored 12 points (perfect 6 for 6 from the field) and veteran guard Tamecka Dixon added 11 points.

San Antonio's Becky Hammon scored a game-high 20 points (6 for 10 shooting including 4 for 8 on threes). Hammon scored 13 points in the first half on 4 for 6 shooting. The Comets did a much better job defending her in the second half.

Sophia Young scored 15 points and Erin Buescher added 10.

The Comets led the Silver Stars 21 to 15 after the first quarter and 39 to 35 at the half. San Antonio kept the game close in the opening 20 minutes thanks to hot shooting from the three-point range. San Antonio connected on 6 of 13 three-point attempts while making just six of 20 from two-point range.

Michelle Snow started the game on fire with 10 points in the first quarter.

San Antonio outscored the Comets 22 to 17 in the third period to take a 57 to 56 lead into the fourth quarter.

Dixon put the Comets ahead with a pull-up jump shot at the 9:35 mark of the fourth quarter as the lead changed hands six more times over the next four minutes.

Ajavon ended the see-saw affair with a putback lay-up to give the Comets a three-point lead (66 to 63) with 4:31 remaining in the game. Three minutes later, Ajavon's hustle kept a loose ball alive and resulted in a lay-up by Shannon Johnson to give the Comets a six point lead (70 to 64) with 1:10 left in the ball game.

"We know that basketball is a game of runs," said Comets head coach Karleen Thompson after the game. "We had a couple of lapses; but, we were able to re-focus. I think that was the key. We controlled the boards (the Comets out rebounded the Silver Stars 42 to 28) and we got the ball inside."

Mistie Williams scored five points and pulled down five rebounds in 16 plus mintues of action for the Comets off the bench.

"Tonight's game, we finally got over that hump," Williams added. "We've been doing every thing right; but, not for long enough. There hasn't been a game where we've been blow out. Tonight, we finally put the pieces of the puzzle together and finally played for 40 minutes and we ended up winning."
