Comets set to host Dream
The Atlanta Dream is a WNBA expansion team in 2008 and the team is currently winless at 0 and 9. The Houston Comets (2-7) hope to keep the Dream winless Monday night inside Reliant Arena.
Despite being winless, Comets' forward Tina Thompson and head coach Karleen Thompson expect the Dream to compete from the opening tip trying to pick up their first victory.
"I haven't seen them (the Dream) play," said Tina Thompson. "Other than the scouting report. I'm familiar with a few of their players. Betty Lennox of course. They have a young team. A very young team with a lot of young players.
"I'm very familiar with Stacie Lovelace because we've played together on USA Basketball as well as against one another in the WNBA.
"Ivory Latta. She's a highly decorated college player. Her WNBA career has gotten off to a slow start; but, she definitely has potential.
"I think their record doesn't do their team justice. They're very talented; but, it's still a matter of getting things together. They're an expansion team that's trying to find their way. The game won't be an easy one for us by any means. We're 2 and 7; so, it's not like we've had very many easy games or any at all. We're going to come in with the same focus as we've had in every game thus far."
Tina isn't concerned about her Comets teammates taking the Dream lightly.
"I don't think so. The unfamiliarity with each other that they have we also have. Even though we have veteran players on our team, this is the first time we've played together as a group. We have a large mix of young players as well. So, we kind of suffer from those same things at points during the game. I don't think we're ever going to take any team lightly."
The fact the Dream is winless does give some concern to Coach Karleen Thompson.
"The fact that their winless," said Coach Thompson. "We've been there. When you're 0 and whatever it is, you don't have anything to lose. You just work hard and that's what the Dream does. I know Marynell (Dream head coach Marynell Meadors). Fred Williams (Dream assistant coach) coached me; so, I know that they're continuing to push to keep their morale up. They're coming in here to get a win. This game is nothing we need to take lightly at all."
Tip is set for 7:30 pm.
