Sellout?

Since my web host is once again working, just a few quick thoughts on the May 27th Comets home opener versus the Minnesota Lynx.

First, clearly the Comets' idea of a "sell out" differs from mine. There were plenty of empty seats at the game. Now, if the team sold the tickets (hopefully not at reduced prices?) and the fans decided not to show up, then that's one thing. Or, perhaps the Comets simply gave tickets away to city organizations; schools; churches; etc. and those fans decided not to show up.

The bottom line is the fans who did attend the game know the home opener was filled with hundreds of empty seats instead of the announced sold out crowd of 7,261.

Next, except for the early part of the second quarter and the awful final five minutes of the fourth quarter and the overtime, the Comets played fairly well in the
98 to 92 overtime loss to the Minnesota Lynx. However, blowing an eleven point lead (82 to 71) in the final 5:36 of the game was inexcusable. Down the stretch, the Comets did a poor job attacking Minnesota's zone defense as well as allowing Lynx rookie Nicky Anosike to dominate them on offense. Anosike scored 12 of her 20 points down the stretch and in the overtime period.

Lastly, the Comets do indeed have a radio station to air their games.

What? You didn't know?

Very few fans know; and, that's a BIG problem.

The Comets reached a deal to have their ball games broadcast on 1070 AM (KNTH). Craig Ackerman calls the action. Sadly, Tuesday night's game was not the first Comets game to air on 1070 this season. Sunday's game in Washington D.C. versus the Washington Mystics was also on 1070.

For some strange reason, the Comets have yet to send a press release announcing the deal with 1070.

After a two game road trip (Friday at Sacramento and Sunday at Seattle), the Comets next home game will be Tuesday, June 3, versus the San Antonio Silver Stars.

I wonder if that game will be "sold out", too.
