What about Recaps?

I'm not always the sharpest knife in the drawer; so, maybe this has been discussed or mentioned before.

The last few days I noticed there aren't very many recaps listed on Yahoo's women's college basketball (Division I) scoreboard for completed ball games. However, there are recaps to all (if not all, 90 plus percent) of the men's college games completed.

For example, about 66 women's college games are listed on
yesterday's Yahoo NCAA women's scoreboard; but, only only three games have recaps posted. In addition, none of the games have box scores either. Conversely, all of the men's college games posted on yesterday's scoreboard list contain box scores and recaps.

Why the discrepancy?

Does Yahoo! only use the Associated Press for the recaps?

I assume all of the women's teams have people in their respective sports information departments who write game summaries; so, why doesn't Yahoo post links to those summaries? Clearly, Yahoo! receives the final scores for the women's college games from someone; so, what's going on with no box scores and no recaps?

It's my understanding that the scoreboard sites (CBS, Yahoo, ESPN) use AP recaps for those scoreboards.

It's really simple, actually - just about all men's games are covered by the AP, while only top-25 women's teams tend to be covered.

As for the box scores - the half-by-half breakdowns are provided by the SportsTicker service. In my limited experience covering college sports, it's been an actual guy who phones in from press row, providing score updates every few minutes. I don't know if that's how it's done everywhere.

Also, the SID recaps are really ... let's say biased. It's not exactly great journalism to have Yahoo link to a page where interested parties can read about Team A's "courageous comeback" or "valiant effort" in a 30-point loss.

Not saying it's right, but I hope that clarified the issues.

Just a few thoughts from a college journalist who covers women's basketball. It's always nice to see other folks on the web discussing women's hoops.

    Good points, Kevin.

I wrote this blog post because I wanted to get opinions from others as well as generate some interest in the coverage of women's hoops.

    Thanks for posting your comments.

Not only does that happen at Yahoo. But, sometimes I don't get recaps on ESPN's scoreboard. And yes Ido think there is something wrong with it. The question is..who to hold responsible for the non-stories, recaps, and box scores.

To respond to Anonymous, I'm not saying it's right, but you have to look at where and how many resources you have to cover something like those games.

The AP gets their work from local writers and if a newspaper can't afford to send somebody to cover those games, then the only information they get is box scores and stats.

The best way to get coverage is to contact the respective sports editors or sports directors for TV and ask for greater coverage.

When they do cover something, click the link on their Web site... increased page views mean somebody's reading and that's something tangible they can look out when handing out assignments.

A lack of writers is a decent and legit reason for no recaps; however, what's the reason for no box scores?

If Yahoo can get the final scores for the games, then Yahoo should be able to post the box scores, too.
