Comets News

As I left the radio station (KCOH 1430 AM, www.kcohradio.com) this evening about 6:15pm, I called to let the Houston Comets know I was planning to stop by today for the final 30 minutes (the allotted media availability time) of practice. I left a message; a few minutes later, the new director of communications (she starts the job "officially" tomorrow) called me to ask when I was going to arrive at practice. I told her about 6:30 or so. She told me "Okay. I'll see you when you get here."

I arrived a few minutes early; so, I walked around a bit and entered the building about 6:40. While wearing my Houston Rockets press pass, I walked down the steps toward the basketball court. A young lady, who I believe is Karleen Thompson's assistant, met me on the steps and said to me "Practice is closed."

I said to her, "It's after 6:30."
She said, "It's still closed."

I asked her, "When will practice be open to the media?"
She answered, "I'm not sure."

So, I said, "Can you give me an idea?"
She said, "When Karleen says so?"

I finally said, "Okay."

I left the building.

One of the equipment people (and a friend of mine, by the way) ran after me and yelled "Kris, you're cool."

I kept walking; and, I said to him, "This isn't right." I got in my car and left to watch the NBA Playoffs.

The PR person called me twice and left me a message; but, by that time, I was already at my next destination.

The Comets need to do a better job communicating with the local media because the fans deserve to know what's going on with their favorite team.

"New Day for Comets"

Comets / Sun "match-up"
As mentioned earlier today to the HRR subscribers,...

Okay, here's what I've been able to learn about the Houston Comets - Connecticut Sun pre-season "match-up":

The scrimmage is closed. Not just to the public; but, unless I was told incorrectly, closed to the media, too.

Delmar Fieldhouse is the location.

Tuesday, May 15, is the date.

What happened to you today at the Comets practice was not right. Do they not understand that all you are trying to do is get information for the fans?

I basicly expressed my opinion yesterday about the lack of communication with the fans. I feel that if this kind of situation continues it is going to effect the success of season.

Is this the first time that we have not had a pre-season game?
    What's up with that???

Kris, I don't know what to say...this is so unbelievable...and sad.

We have always had preseason games every year to the best of my knowledge.

It's sad to see pettiness like this. It certainly is not for the good of the league or the Houston Comets.

I suggest anyone not happy start calling/visiting Hilton himself with their opinion.

What was the message they left you?

The message contained an apology from the media director for the miscommunication.

    I'm cool with that.

I would have been less upset had you told us you had gotten an apology.

Did the media director explain what happened, whose fault it was?

No, she didn't say whose fault it was. Placing blame for missing yesterday's practice is not my point for writing this article.

I want the Comets to do all they can to inform the media and their fans what's happening with the team.

The HRR isn't as big as the tv stations; the Houston Chronicle; or Sports Radio 610. People who don't surf the Internet want to know about the Comets, too.

I've covered the Comets since 2000. The new media director was an intern with the team in 2000; so, we've known each other for years.

I've known Karleen Thompson for years.

This year's team, especially, needs to do a better job getting the word out about the team because it has new ownership, new coaches, etc.. The more people who know about the team and attend the games the better.
