Rockets Crush Grizzlies

HOUSTON, TX (Toyota Center) -- The Houston Rockets started slowly; however, that slow start was erased by a sensational third quarter which helped the Rockets blow out the woebegone Memphis Grizzlies 104 to 79 Wednesday night in front of an announced crowd of 17,220 fans inside Toyota Center.

Luis Scola scored 22 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds while Carl Landry continued his excellent play of late scoring 20 points (9 for 13 from the field) in just under 25 minutes of action. Landry also added four blocked shots including stuffing Memphis forward Rudy Gay twice on dunk attempts.

Both teams played bad basketball in the first quarter. The first quarter had no flow. The Rockets (5 - 3) committed six turnovers and shot 40.0% (8 for 20) from the field while Memphis (1 - 8) also turned the ball over six times and shot just 35.0% (7 for 20) from the field.

The Rockets led 20 to 17 after the first period.

The Rockets played better in the second quarter -- only 1 turnover and 55.0% (11 for 20) field goal shooting; however, the Grizzlies outscored the Rockets 20 to 12 in the paint in the quarter to help trim the Rockets 10 point lead to just five (43 to 38) at the half.

The Rockets erupted in the third quarter and outscored the Griz 31 to 19 in the quarter. Thirteen made baskets came thanks to eight assists. Plus, the Rockets limited the Griz to just 7 for 20 (35.0%) shooting from the field in the quarter. Houston also outrebounded Memphis 13 to 8 in the quarter.

"At halftime, we talked about the fact that we didn't come out with the energy that we needed to," said Rockets head coach Rick Adelman. "There just wasn't a spark. The third quarter we really turned it on. We played much better in the third. We got into the open court; got fastbreak points."

The fourth quarter was similar to the third. Despite allowing Memphis to score the first two baskets of the fourth period, the Rockets responded as Kyle Lowry kick started the Rockets' offense with six of his game-high 10 assists in the final period.

"Kyle was just terrific all night long when he was in there," Adelman said. "Carl gave us a big lift. Luis was good on the boards all night. It was solid win after the first half. The second half we were really solid."

The undersized Rockets outscored the sorry Grizzlies 62 to 50 in the paint and 27 to 17 in fastbreak points.

Rockets' forward Trevor Ariza dished out a career-high 7 assists. Ariza scored 17 points on 7 for 17 shooting; however, Ariza made 6 of 9 from inside two point range. Trevor shot an icy 1 for 8 on three point attempts.
