Ariza to Rockets
ESPN.com's Marc Stein is citing sources stating that free agent forward Trevor Ariza has verbally agreed to a deal with the Houston Rockets.
Rockets' General Manager Daryl Morey met with Ariza earlier today; and, apparently, Ariza has verbally committed to join the Rockets.
According to Ariza's agent, Ariza turned down "an offer that was nine million dollars more than what the Rockets offered".
Free agents can officially sign with NBA teams beginning July 8.
Ariza, 24 years old, has decided to join the Rockets; and, the 6'8" forward's signing will be the first bit of good news for the organization (besides acquiring the three 2nd round draft picks) in a few days.
Rockets forward Ron Artest has verbally agreed to a three-year, $18 M with the Los Angeles Lakers; while Orlando Magic restricted free agent center Marcin Gortat has reportedly verbally committed to the Dallas Mavericks. Gortat's decision is more disappointing than Artest's choice.
Of course Artest and Gortat's verbal agreements with other teams, pales in comparison to the gloom and doom surrounding the potential scenario of Yao Ming's missing the 2009 - 2010 season due to problems with the hairline fracture in his injured left foot.
Ariza stepped up his game for the Lakers during the 2009 NBA Playoffs; however, his game seems dependent on star players who'll command double teams which result in open shots for him. He's a good player in transition; and, he plays the passing lanes very well on defense.
