No Picks, Some Buzz about Rockets

For a team with no draft picks (currently) in the June 25th 2009 NBA Draft, the Houston Rockets still have a bit of buzz surrounding them.

Selfishly, I wish the Rockets would obtain a few draft picks to improve the chances the Rockets would invite the media to attend the workouts and speak with the invited players. I know the Rockets have already worked out players; but, the players are not household names. Many of the workouts are for guys who may be invited to participate on the Rockets' summer squad.

The organization is being very hush, hush as the draft approaches. Aside from this article on rockets.com, a few tweets from Rockets' GM Daryl Morey; and, info provided by the Chronicle's Jonathan Feigen like this article, the Rockets aren't in the news very much in the city of Houston.

The silence from the Rockets doesn't signal lack of activity by the club. Far from it.

NBA teams are calling the Rockets inquiring about Tracy McGrady's status. Basketball people saw the Rockets give the Lakers fits in the 2009 Playoffs -- without McGrady; and, a few teams are assuming the Rockets are willing to give McGrady away for a small bag of bricks and some gift cards.

No way.

The Rockets' fans who are driving the "Get McGrady out of Houston" train simply want McGrady gone regardless of the deal. Any deal is better than no deal. But, the Rockets' organization cannot think so harshly.

The NBA is a business. If McGrady is indeed "motivated and determined" along with healthy (of course), his presence on the team would be an asset in 2009 - 2010. Clearly, that's a HUGE "if"; however, the Rockets have plenty of time to listen to trade offers from NBA teams until the February 2010 trade deadline.

If McGrady isn't healthy in 2009 - 2010, then, the Rockets can simply thank Tracy for his time with the club; wish him good luck in the future; and, use his expired contract next summer.

Would the Rockets like to obtain a pick in next week's NBA Draft? Yes.

Would the Rockets mortgage the future to obtain the pick? No.

The Rockets have been mentioned in rumors involving the 2nd pick; the 5th pick; and the 8th pick in the Draft. Haven't you noticed the most trades that are made were never leaked to the public at all? Internet or no Internet.

Things may be somewhat quiet in Rockets' land right now; but, free agency starts in July. Ron Artest's free agency status will liven things up in H-town in no time.
