The HRR's 25% Theory Returns for another NBA Season
The past few years, I've written what I call "The 25% Theory" in the "Members' Section" of the website. Well, I'm phasing out certain areas of the subscriber only section in hopes of generating more visits to TheHRR.com. Consequently, here's my "25% Theory" for the 2006 - 2007 NBA season.
The NBA is cyclical. Some cycles are longer than others; however, teams experience transitional periods in their pursuit on an NBA title. I believe teams are either winning the championship; building for a championship; stuck in mediocrity; rebuilding; or simply in NBA Hell.
Consequently, I believe, the league, throughout its history, will always have a class system consistsing of elite teams; good teams; mediocre teams; and bad teams. The teams will generally group themselves along a 25% line for each category which means each category should contain approximately 7 teams in the 30 team league.
This season, I believe five teams are among the elite level and truly have a legitimate chance to win the NBA Championship this season. Ten Teams qualify as "Good Teams" while seven are mediocre which leaves eight squads in the rebuilding mode. For various reasons (coaching, bloated payroll, mismatch of talent, etc.), the New York Knicks reside in NBA Hell.
As a result, the following is how the 2006 - 2007 season breaks down as I see it:
Elite Teams (Teams with a Realistic Chance of Winning the NBA Title Entering This Season)
Tier One: Miami Heat; Dallas Mavericks; and San Antonio Spurs.
Tier Two: Detroit Pistons and Phoenix Suns.
Good Teams (Teams that are Playoff Bound or will finish above .500)
Playoff Bound:
Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Houston Rockets, New Orleans / Oklahoma City Hornets, Orlando Magic, and Utah Jazz.
Above .500: Los Angeles Clippers; Los Angeles Lakers and New Jersey Nets.
Mediocre Teams (Teams in NBA Purgatory -- Hovering Around .500)
NBA Purgatory:
Indiana Pacers, Memphis Grizzlies, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Philadelphia 76ers, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Wizards
Bad Teams (Teams that are Rebuilding; Building for the Future; or Residing in NBA Hell)
Rebuilding: Golden State Warriors, Seattle Supersonics, and Toronto Raptors.
Building for the Future: Atlanta Hawks; Boston Celtics; Charlotte Bobcats; and Portland Trailblazers.
NBA Hell: New York Knicks.
