Which NBA team will acquire Mike James?
The NBA free agency period has begun.
Mike James is in hot demand; so, hot that Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy appeared at James' front door as soon as the free agency period begun -- June 30, 11:01 p.m., Houston time.
According to the Houston Chronicle, the Rockets have a good chance to sign James:
The Rockets have made their preference for the 31-year-old James clear, and James has been unusually outspoken about his interest in playing for the Rockets again. James' agent, Bill Duffy, said the Rockets are one of "numerous teams" that have already reached out to James. Duffy would not specify who else is interested.
However, today's Dallas Morning News reports a different tale:
Mike James, who played last season for Toronto, has been offered the Mavericks' mid-level exception, worth about $5.5 million.
The hang-up, apparently, is length of contract. The 6-2 James is 31 years old, and the Mavericks may be unwilling to go the full five years. If James is willing to take three years, the Mavericks appear set to agree.
