UH Lady Cougars beat Southern Miss 92-58
Though the Houston Lady Cougars' record is just 5 and 8, they are beginning to play better basketball. Just ask Southern Miss.
The Lady Coogs defeated Southern Miss 92 to 58; and, the game was not that close. Four UH players scored in double-figures. UH freshman wing player Nakazi Glover led all scorers with a career-high 21 points on just 10 field goal attempts. Three other Lady Coogs scored career-highs: senior Emily Fryters scored 12 points; junior Ryan Meyers scored 19; and junior center ShaQualyon McKinney added six points. UH shot 54.1% (33 for 61 from the field) including 7 for 14 from the three point line. Sophomore Tye Jackson scored 15 points; handed out eight assists; and pulled down seven rebounds.
Southern Miss shot just 28.3% for the game.
Post-game mp3s:
forward Emily Fryters: "...playing more aggressively..."
wing Nakazi Glover: "...more aggressive..."
Head coach Joe Curl: "...breath of fresh air..."
forward Ryan Meyers: "...much better chemistry..."

I enjoyed today's game, but since this was my first game I have attended, I didn't know if the Lady Coogs were great or S. Miss were just horrible. I think it is both.
Mr. SORF said S. Miss didn't have any interior defense against the taller Lady Coogs, but honestly the S. Miss didn't have much defense anywhere else on the court. And I agree with the stats; S. Miss offense was terrible. It was 14-0 before S. Miss made their first basket.
I was impressed with 5 Lady Coogs. #12 Sha'ratta Hawkins has a great three point shot, # 31 Nakazi Glover, is a force under the basket, and she can spin to the basket. #34 ShaQalyon Mckinney is not afraid to battle for a rebound. #15 Ryan Meyers had a great offensive game in the first half, but played more of assisting/passing game in the second half. Any she wasn't afraid to go under the basket and battle for a rebound too. And then there is #23 Tye "The Banker" Jackson. She had two shots that I thought were sure misses only to bank through the basket. Most of her shots are on the money, but the ones that aren't, still pay dividends! ;)
I still think the Lady Coogs at times played out of control. Yes, they were aggressive, but they still need to control some of that aggressiveness and learn when to "stop and pop". Too many times they drove into waiting S. Miss players only to be stopped or lose the ball.
There is a lot of talent with this young Lady Coogs team, and I look forward to watching their growth as a team in the next few years.
