Houston Cougars edge Islanders 86 to 83 in 2OTs
Very exciting game between the Coogs and the Islanders of TX A&M-Corpus Christi! Despite shooting just 36.1% from the field for the game, UH won 86 to 83 in double overtime. The Coogs attempted 35 threes and made just 12. UH junior guard Oliver Lafayette scored just 9 points (3 for 14 shooting); but, Coach Tom Penders told us O was playing with a very bad head cold; so, the Islanders' tough defense wasn't the only reason Oliver struggled Saturday night.
Brian Latham's two missed free throws with 0.8 seconds left at the end of the first OT didn't cost UH the ball game.
UH plays TAMU-CC next month in Corpus on the 7th.
Here's some post-game audio (in mp3 format):
Brian Latham:
"...we're so close-knit..."
Lanny Smith:
"...we knew how good they were..."
UH coach Tom Penders:
"...great win for us..."
Islanders' head coach Ronnie Arrow:
"...any post-season tournament..."
