Pat Summitt after Vols' Big Win over Horns
Tennessee versus Texas isn't the titanic tilt it used to be; but, it's always good to see two top women's programs face each other on the basketball court.
Sunday afternoon's match-up wasn't pretty to watch as both teams struggled to make shots in the first half; however, following shooting a chilly 31.4% (11 for 35) in the first half, Tennessee got on track to shoot 57.1% (16 for 28) and routed the Longhorns 67 to 46 before an announced crowd of 7,522 at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas.
The Lady Vols dominated the rebounds 48 to 30 and swarmed all over Longhorns' All-American Tiffany Jackson the entire game. Jackson made just 2 of her 13 field goal attempts in the game.
Vols' Superstar Candace Parker struggled with her shot (5 for 15); but, she did finish the game with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots.
Tennessee was led by Sidney Spencer's 15 points. In this game, Spencer showed she's more than just a three-point shooter by knocking down shots off the dribble as well as making a few step back shots.
Junior point guard Shannon Bobbit settled down in the second half for Tennesse and penetrated the Longhorns' defense repeatedly and finished with a game-high seven assists.
Vols' head coach Pat Summitt spoke with the media after the game; and, she mentioned her team "...missed so many lay-ups..." in the first half. She was definitely right.
